Galeano Lives On (Poem)

Darkness fills the jungle,

As the branches block out the light,

Sweat drips from his forehead,

As his mind prepares to fight,

Silence falls as he pauses for breath,

But the storm awaits…

A leaf on the ground crunches,

A piece of fruit drops from a tree,

The unknown and unpredictable,

Are the real rulers here,

A school in flames,

A clinic attacked,

A peaceful community,

Is called to act,

The violence planned,

Provocation designed,

And peace disrupted,

As they seek to undermine,

And Galeano walks alone among the trees,

Those responsible for the aggravation,

The spineless assassins,

Mercenaries speeding away,

From the citizens amassing,

Running from the crime scene,

With the protection of weapons,

Galeano, meanwhile, is courageous,

And committed to his cause,

Uncertain of his fate,

In a country of useless laws,

A figure emerges,

And he stops…

Breathing heavily, he looks around…

Another figure emerges,

From a different direction,

And another,

From another,

And another…

But he fights,

Stands tall,

And dies on his feet,

With a bullet in his leg,

His upper body,

And in his brain,

He is born again,

A hero,

An example of resistance and dignity,

The seed will sprout,

And the trees will move apart,

And the sun’s rays will caress the ground,

Love and freedom, at its heart,

This land is precious,

And free,

His blood was spilt,

Like that of many others,

In the name of liberty,

The land remains in the hands of the People,

And his sacrifice will be remembered,

And never forgotten!
