Surrounded by slogans and signs of happiness, motorised convoy of CNTE workers arrived at the Ángel de la Independencia in Mexico City at 17:30 on Thursday 7th of November. This convoy, of education workers from Section 22 of the SNTE and other democratic sectors of the teaching union, left Oaxaca City for the Mexican capital on Monday 4th November.

When they arrived in the cities where they planned to stay the night (Huajuapan de León, Tehuacán, Pue, Ciudad de Puebla and Cuernavaca, Mor.), they were well received by their hosts, who gave them food and shelter.

This convoy reunited a conscious mass of teachers who have joined the battle waged by the CNTE because they are aware of the real intentions of the government’s ‘Educational Reform’. They know that Peña Nieto’s policies will only serve the rich and powerful elites and, as a consequence, damage the people.

Speakers from different states (Oaxaca, Chiapas, Yucatán, Michoacán, and Veracruz) reiterated the main demand of the CNTE’s protests – the abolition of articles 3 and 73, the defence of a free, secular, public education at the service of the people and not of the powerful, and the destruction of the ill-named Educational ‘Reform’.

Professor Rubén Núñez Ginez, General Secretary of Section 22 said, “We have become a popular teacher’s movement. The arrival of this convoy is proof that the CNTE has recovered its strength and that the ill-named Educational ‘Reform’ will not be allowed to continue!” At the end of the rally, the teachers left for the Monumento a la Revolución where the representative sit-in is based.
